Indemnity Plans
Indemnity plans have been around since the beginning of health insurance plans. They were the most common type of healthcare plan until the introduction of the major medical and hmo which started to become popular in the mid to late 70's. The most common types of indemnity plans that you might remember are the hospital indemnity plans that paid a flat dollar per day or the old style surgical plans that paid a set dollar amount for each procedure listed. Today an indemnity plan is still quite popular however the product is most often sold as supplemental insurance more so than primary health plans. A sampling of these types of plans would include:
Cancer and critical illness plans
Accident medical plans
Dental plans
Some disability plans
Daily hospital indemnity plan and a host of other medical indemnity plans.
As an opinion only, it would be suggested that in these days of extremely high tech medical equipment, an endless supply of new drugs coming on the market, medical research and development, and incredibly high health care costs it would simply not make sense to purchase these types of insurance plans as a primary source of health care coverage unless your choices are that limited either financially or from a medical underwriting / acceptability perspective.
